Quick Answer:
Just Add Paint recently completed a large interior painting project for a repeat customer near Mechanicsburg, PA, transforming the entire first floor, upstairs hallway, trim, doors, ceilings, and two-story foyer. To create a durable finish capable of standing up to grandchildren, pets, and everyday wear, we used Sherwin-Williams Scuff Tuff Matte in Kilim Beige on the walls, Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel on the trim and doors, and Sherwin-Williams ProMar 400 Flat White on the ceilings. This project presented unique challenges, including occupied workspaces, recently installed trim requiring extensive preparation, dust-control requirements, and difficult-to-access foyer walls. Despite the obstacles, our team completed the project in just seven working days, delivering a brighter, cleaner, and more durable home for the homeowners to enjoy for years to come.
When a past customer calls us back for another project, we take it as a pretty good sign that we didn’t accidentally paint their cat, break anything important, or leave them regretting their life choices.
This recent interior painting project started with a repeat customer from Etter, PA—just a hop, skip, and a jump from Mechanicsburg. We had previously painted a bonus room bedroom above their garage, and apparently they liked us enough to invite us back for a much larger challenge.
This time, the project included nearly the entire first floor of the home, plus the upstairs hallway, trim, doors, ceilings, and a two-story entryway that seemed determined to remind us why ladders can be intimidating.

The homeowners wanted a durable finish that could stand up to grandchildren, pets, everyday life, and whatever mysterious activities happen in busy family homes when nobody is looking.
As professional painters, we know that durability matters just as much as appearance. A beautiful paint job isn’t much fun if it starts showing wear after a few months.
Why We Chose Kilim Beige

The wall color selection was Sherwin-Williams Kilim Beige, applied in Scuff Tuff Matte.
Kilim Beige has remained popular for years because it strikes a rare balance. It has enough warmth to make a home feel inviting, but it avoids the overly yellow appearance that some traditional beige colors can develop.
In homes with white trim, wood flooring, stone fireplaces, or warm furnishings, Kilim Beige creates a comfortable and timeless backdrop that works well in both natural and artificial light.
For this project, it was exactly what the home needed.
The homeowners wanted a brighter, fresher look without venturing into the world of trendy colors that may or may not still be fashionable by the next Olympics.
The finish itself deserves some attention too. While Sherwin-Williams markets Scuff Tuff as a matte finish, its high acrylic content gives it durability and washability that feels much closer to a traditional eggshell finish. For active households, it has become one of our favorite wall paints.
Brightening Up the Ceilings

The ceilings presented a different challenge.
Over time, they had become slightly darker than a standard builder-grade shell white and showed some discoloration around HVAC airflow areas.
This is actually fairly common in homes throughout Mechanicsburg and Central Pennsylvania.
To brighten everything up, we used Sherwin-Williams ProMar 400 Flat White. We’ve found this product provides excellent hide and coverage, especially when covering aged ceilings that need a fresh start.
The result was a noticeably brighter interior without making the ceilings look overly stark or artificial.
Trim Tough Enough for Real Life

For the trim and doors, we selected Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in untinted white.
If there were a paint version of a pickup truck, this would probably be it.
Emerald Urethane levels beautifully, dries hard, resists scuffs, and stands up exceptionally well to everyday abuse. It’s one of the reasons we frequently recommend it for homes with children, pets, and frequent visitors.
The Challenges Behind the Scenes
Of course, no large interior painting project would be complete without a few surprises.
We had furniture to work around.
The homeowner was working from home in an adjacent room with the door open.
Recently installed trim needed significantly more filling, sanding, and caulking than we typically encounter.
The homeowners requested that we keep dust to an absolute minimum.
Fortunately, our Festool HEPA dustless sanding system is exceptionally good at its job. While no painting project is completely dust-free, the system allowed us to prep the trim while keeping airborne dust to a minimum.
The two-story foyer also provided enough awkward angles to keep things interesting.
Even experienced painters occasionally find themselves standing on a ladder wondering whose idea this was in the first place.
Meanwhile, Rich Was in Fiji…

Adding to the challenge was the temporary absence of Just Add Paint team leader Rich.
Rather than being unavailable for some boring reason, Rich was vacationing in Fiji.
Every day.
With pictures.
Lots of pictures.
Palm trees. Beaches. Crystal-clear water.
We’re not saying we were jealous.
We’re just saying that every photo somehow seemed to arrive right around the time we were setting up ladders in the foyer.
The good news is that Rich was available for the first day of the project, helping us get off to a strong start before departing for tropical adventures.
Powered by Dunkin’ and Determination
With Rich away, Curtis had to step away from the office and spend several days back in production mode.
This definitely wasn’t a one-person project.
Jack and Curtis shifted into high gear, fueled primarily by nearby Dunkin’ coffee and mild stubbornness.
Curtis focused heavily on preparation work, including sanding with 220-grit abrasives using the Festool system, cleaning surfaces with Krud Kutter pre-paint degreaser/deglosser, painting doors and trim, and assisting with wall cutting where needed.
Meanwhile, Jack tackled ceilings, low cutting, and rolling walls.
The walls hadn’t been painted in quite some time and absorbed paint like a sponge. To build coverage and achieve a more uniform finish, we used a 9/16-inch Arroworthy microfiber roller, which provided additional film build and hiding power.
The Foyer Olympics
The two-story entryway ultimately became the most challenging area of the project.
There were moments when Curtis and Jack were rolling simultaneously, passing the roller back and forth to maintain a wet edge on the taller walls.
There were also moments when Curtis performed what could generously be described as ladder gymnastics on the Little Giant ladder.
Professional ladder gymnastics, of course.
Nobody fell.
Nobody cried.
We’ll call that a win.
The Final Result
Rich’s absence ultimately added about two days to our schedule, but despite the challenges, we completed this large-scale interior painting project in just seven working days.
We also owe a special thank-you to the homeowner’s father, who graciously helped us access the home while the family was away during the second week.
Thanks to his help, the homeowners returned to a freshly painted, brighter, cleaner home with durable finishes designed to stand up to everyday life for years to come.
And thankfully, Rich eventually returned from Fiji so we could stop living through his vacation photos and get back to normal.
