How much does it cost to paint shutter

SUMMARY:

Just Add Paint recently completed an exterior shutter painting project in Mechanicsburg, PA for homeowners preparing to sell their house. After years of sun exposure and repeated HOA notices about faded shutters, the owners wanted a cost-effective way to improve curb appeal before listing their home. Using a professional cleaning, sanding, and painting process with Sherwin-Williams Resilience exterior paint, we restored the shutters to their original color and completed the project in a single day, helping the home look better maintained and market-ready. All this for a total cost of under $1000

Sometimes homeowners call us because they’re excited about a fresh new color.

Sometimes they call because they’re remodeling.

And sometimes they call because the HOA has been sending strongly-worded letters for so long that the envelopes are starting to feel personal.

This recent shutter painting project in Mechanicsburg, PA fell into that third category.

The homeowner found Just Add Paint online while searching for highly-rated house painters in Mechanicsburg and was preparing to put their home on the market. Their shutters had faded dramatically over the years, and the HOA had been politely (and repeatedly) encouraging them to address the issue.

To their credit, they didn’t want to leave the problem for the next owner. They wanted the home looking its best before listing, and they wanted it done quickly.

Fortunately, shutter painting projects are one of the few exterior services we can usually squeeze into our schedule.

Why We Like Shutter Painting Projects

As a smaller painting company, we don’t take on a large volume of exterior painting projects.

Exterior scheduling is a little like trying to organize a picnic with Mother Nature. If it’s too hot, paint can flash-dry before properly leveling and adhering. If rain is coming, we’re obviously not painting. Add wind, humidity, and the occasional Pennsylvania weather mood swing, and scheduling becomes an adventure.

Shutters, exterior doors, and trim projects are different.

Most can be completed in just one or two days, making them perfect for homeowners who want a noticeable improvement without a major exterior renovation.

This project was completed in a single day.

The Unexpected Shrubbery Challenge

These bushes needed to be trimmed before we could paint these sad, faded shutters in Mechanicsburg

Our biggest obstacle wasn’t the shutters.

It was the shrubs.

Several bushes had grown directly in front of the shutters, making safe ladder placement difficult. This is actually something we discuss during the estimating process because overgrown landscaping can significantly impact access, production time, and cost.

Fortunately, Curtis had thrown hedge trimmers in the truck “just in case.”

For once, that last-minute decision paid off.

A little trimming gave us safe ladder access, saved the homeowner from needing a landscaper, prevented a change order, and kept the project on schedule.

Everyone wins.

Well…except the shrubs.

Our Process for Painting Exterior Shutters

Homeowners often ask if shutters should be removed before painting.

In most cases, we recommend painting them in place.

Many shutter fasteners become brittle with age, and removing them can create repair issues that often take longer than the painting itself.

Our shutter painting process includes:

  1. Cleaning and deglossing with Krud Kutter Pre-Paint Cleaner.
  2. Scrubbing with a scratch pad to remove contaminants.
  3. Sanding with contoured 150-220 grit sanding pads.
  4. Applying two coats of Sherwin-Williams Resilience Satin (vinyl-safe formula).
  5. Painting the top shutters first, then the lower shutters, and repeating the sequence for the second coat.

We like Sherwin-Williams Resilience because it offers excellent adhesion, strong color retention, flexibility during seasonal expansion and contraction, and a fast dry time that’s particularly helpful for exterior projects.

The Biggest Surprise: The Original Color

The real adventure began when we tried to identify the original shutter color.

The homeowner had an old builder note that looked like it had survived several moves, a basement flood, and possibly a treasure hunt.

Thankfully, our Sherwin-Williams representative, Jared, was able to track down a matching color in the system.

When we opened the formula, all of us had the same reaction:

“Wait…that’s the color?”

Years of sun exposure had faded the shutters far more than anyone realized. The freshly painted shutters were significantly darker and richer than the weathered version we’d been staring at all day. (Check out the Sherwin-Williams Jasper for dark green shutters).

Once completed, the home immediately looked sharper, cleaner, and far more market-ready.

Not bad for a one-day project.

SHUTTER PAINTING FAQS:

How much does it cost to paint exterior shutters in Mechanicsburg, PA?
Shutters in Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, and Harrisburg are typically priced between $60 and $120 per shutter, depending on size, accessibility, condition, cleaning requirements, and whether the shutters are louvered or raised-panel styles. A typical home with 10–12 shutters often falls between $600 and $1,500 for professional painting. This is generally 1/3 – 1/2 the cost of shutter replacement when you factor in the new shutter + labor cost.

Should shutters be removed before painting?
Usually no. Older shutter fasteners often break during removal, making in-place painting the safer and more cost-effective option.

What paint works best on vinyl shutters?
We typically use Sherwin-Williams Resilience Satin in vinyl-safe colors because it offers excellent adhesion, flexibility, and color retention. Sherwin-Williams Emerald is also a nice choice for painting wood and when using lighter colors.

How long do painted shutters last?
Properly prepared and painted shutters can look great for many years, though longevity depends on sun exposure, weather conditions, and the quality of the previous coating. As a general guideline:

Shutter TypeTypical Repaint Cycle
Vinyl shutters (painted)7–10 years
Wood shutters5–8 years
Composite shutters8–12 years
Factory-colored vinyl shuttersOften 10–15+ years before replacement or painting

Can painting shutters help sell a home?
Yes. Faded shutters are often one of the first things buyers notice from the street. Freshly painted shutters can significantly improve curb appeal and overall first impressions.
