House painting ideas for the foyer
Beautiful 2-story foyer in Mechanicsburg. Foyers cost between $ 1,500 and $ 4,500, depending on many variables.

Quick Answer:
Painting a two-story foyer in Mechanicsburg, PA typically costs $1500-$4500 and takes 1–3 days with a professional crew. Projects with high ceilings, detailed molding, and heavy natural light require specialized tools and techniques to achieve a smooth, even finish.

Some projects you remember because they’re technically challenging.
Some because they turn out great.

And then there are the ones you remember because of… the whiskey.

This recent project in Mechanicsburg, PA came from a repeat customer we had previously worked with on their legendary basement whiskey bar. Not a couple bottles on a shelf—we’re talking a full Irish whisky collection that deserves its own zip code.

Naturally, we wrapped that project with a “final inspection.” (Strictly professional. Totally not a tasting.)

So when they called us back, we were in.

The Scope: Stairs (Easy) + Two-Story Foyer (Not Easy)

This round included:

  • Painting the stairway leading down to the whiskey bar
  • Tackling a two-story foyer with walls and ceiling

The stairway? Pretty straightforward.

The foyer? A different story.

We were dealing with:

  • ~18-foot walls
  • A large window creating heavy sidelighting
  • Ceiling molding that required precision cut-ins
  • Angles that don’t exactly cooperate

In other words: a space that will absolutely highlight mistakes if you make them.

Scaffold or No Scaffold?

At first glance, it looked like a scaffold job. The homeowner thought so too.

But after walking it, we realized:

  • A scaffold might help with ceiling access
  • But it would make it harder to properly roll the walls

And with tall walls, extension pole control is everything.

The Move: Ladder Stand-Off

House Painting Ideas for the Foyer
The ladder standoff/stabilizer was exactly what we needed for the angles in this 2-story foyer

We opted for a ladder stand-off (stabilizer), which holds the ladder about a foot off the wall.

That gave us:

  • Better reach and angles
  • Access inside tight areas like the chair rail
  • More flexibility than a bulky scaffold

Sometimes the simpler setup is the better one.

Ceiling Strategy: Soften the Look

This ceiling wasn’t just a quick repaint. The existing tone was slightly darker, and the molding meant everything had to be clean and intentional.

What We Used:

  • Paint: Sherwin-Williams ProMar 400 (Flat)
  • Color: Shell White

Why It Worked:

  • Softened the space without going stark white
  • Matched the existing trim
  • Reduced glare from natural light

Flat finish helped keep the ceiling subtle—which is exactly the goal.

Walls: Beating Sidelighting

That big window brought in great light… and exposed everything.

Sidelighting highlights:

  • Roller marks
  • Lap lines
  • Sheen inconsistencies

So product and technique mattered.

What We Used:

  • Paint: Sherwin-Williams Cashmere
  • Finish: Eggshell
  • Color: Outerbanks

Cashmere is one of our go-to paints because it:

  • Lays down smooth
  • Levels well
  • Holds up in real-world use

We paired it with an Arroworthy 9/16″ roller cover, which holds more paint and helps maintain a consistent finish from top to bottom.

On an 18-foot wall, that consistency is everything.

How Long Does It Take?

For most homes in Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, and the Harrisburg area, a two-story foyer project takes:

👉 1–3 days with a professional crew

For this job:

  • Day 1: Prep, ceiling, first coat on walls
  • Day 2: Final coat + stairway

With a 3-man crew, we wrapped in just under 2 days.

What Does It Cost to Paint a Two-Story Foyer in Mechanicsburg, PA?

Here’s a realistic range for Central PA:

  • Stairway: $600–$1,500
  • Two-story walls: $1500-$3000
  • Ceilings with molding: $800-$2000

👉 Typical total: $3000-$6000

Cost Factors:

  • Height and accessibility
  • Amount of trim/molding
  • Paint quality and coats
  • Furniture and protection needs

(Translation: the more complicated the space, the more planning—and labor—it takes.)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

One of the biggest issues we see in spaces like this:

👉 Ignoring how lighting affects the finish

Wrong paint or technique + heavy natural light =

  • Visible roller marks
  • Uneven sheen
  • A finish that looks good at night and rough in the morning

This is where product choice and application experience really matter.

Who This Type of Project Is For

You’re a good candidate if:

  • You still have builder-grade flat paint
  • Your walls look fine… until sunlight hits them
  • You’ve updated other areas, and the foyer now feels dated
  • You’re prepping to sell your home

We see this all the time in newer homes around Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill.

Products Used

  • Ceiling: Sherwin-Williams ProMar 400 Flat – Shell White
  • Walls: Sherwin-Williams Cashmere Eggshell – Outerbanks
  • Application: Arroworthy 9/16″ roller covers

The Result (and the Important Part)

The finished space felt:

  • Brighter (without being harsh)
  • Smoother from top to bottom
  • More cohesive with the trim

And most importantly—the homeowners were thrilled.

Which led to…

The Return of the “Tip”

Let’s just say the whiskey bar made another appearance.

We can confirm:

  • The paint still looked great
  • The collection somehow got better

We’re not saying that’s part of our pricing structure…
…but we’re also not saying it hurts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need scaffolding for a two-story foyer?
Not always. Ladder stabilizers often allow better access and flexibility.

What finish is best for foyer walls?
Eggshell is ideal—it balances durability and appearance.

How do you avoid roller marks on tall walls?
Using the right paint, proper roller covers, and maintaining a wet edge across large sections.

Should ceilings be bright white?
Not necessarily. Softer whites like Shell White often look more natural and cohesive.
